Harvey Milk was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. Later in Milk’s life, he became a gay rights activist. In 1978, Milk was assassinated. He was considered “a martyr for gay rights”, and was called “the most famous and most significantly open LGBT official ever elected in the United States.”
